Playoff spots are being clinched, hearts are being broken and some teams are just ready for it all to be over.
A week from now they’ll be playing wild card games, so here are the penultimate power rankings of the regular season.
First 4
1. (2/2/6/5/7/6/2/1/1/3/9/2/3/5/15) A’s: Stayed hot despite clinching the AL West. Plus we caught some of “Moneyball” on FX Sunday. We’ve got a feeling they’re due this postseason.
2. (1/1/7/10/5/8/9/4/5/5/8/7/7/7/12) Red Sox: The only team with a chance at 100 wins, and if they pull it off they’d be on quite a roll heading into the playoffs.
3. (4/5/5/7/9/11/4/2/2/4/3/1/1/1/1) Cardinals: Took advantage of the Reds and Pirates playing each other. Losing the division now would be like losing a 3-1 lead in the NLCS. Too soon?
4. (7/8/4/2/3/2/5/5/6/9/7/9/10/11/5) Tigers: Not attracting much attention with the wild, wild AL wild card race, but they’ll be a factor in October.
Middle of the majors
5. (3/10/11/11/13/5/7/9/11/6/13/17/27/12/7) Indians: Control their own destiny with a favorable schedule that plays to their strengths.
6. (8/7/2/3/1/3/8/11/12/10/11/5/2/4/4) Braves: Resisted the urge to dive into the ivy to celebrate at Wrigley.
7. (5/6/8/8/6/4/6/¾/1/¼/6/6/9) Pirates: Guaranteeing a home playoff game would be a nice cap to the season. Not that they couldn’t win in Cincinnati or St. Louis.
8. (6/3/9/9/10/12/11/10/9/8/2/3/5/3/2) Reds: They’re a sleeper if they can get by the wild card game.
9. (10/14/10/6/11/9/1/6/7/11/19/18/14/13/17) Rays: The Rays have had their shaky moments, but they’ve been in playoff position since just after Independence Day. No reason to think they won’t hold on this week. a 4-game sweep of the Orioles was huge.
10. (9/4/3/½/1/3/12/13/24/24/23/20/27/25) Dodgers: The least liked playoff team, according to a report. Apparently trashing a locker room > pool party.
11. (11/13/14/13/8/10/14/21/17/18/17/12/19/26/23) Royals: If a walk-off grand slam doesn’t propel them into the winning streak they need, nothing will.
12. (14/9/¼/4/7/12/7/3/2/4/8/4/2/3) Rangers: It’s not too late to right the ship, but after being a strike away from winning the World Series in 2011 and a win away from clinching the division in 2012, it just seems destined now that they’ll fall a game short of the playoffs in 2013.
13. (13/12/13/14/16/14/13/14/8/13/12/13/9/14/6) Yankees: Rivera, Pettite … and Jeter?
14. (15/16/17/20/22/19/18/15/15/15/21/19/17/19/14) Nationals: Started their surge too late. Guess they should have gone for it all last year.
15. (12/11/12/12/12/13/10/8/10/7/6/6/11/8/13) Orioles: Picked a bad time for a five-game losing streak. And the wrong team to lose four of them against.
16. (16/15/15/16/19/17/16/13/16/14/10/11/8/9/10) Diamondbacks: If you don’t want the Dodgers celebrating in your pool, don’t let them clinch in your house… or erase the nearly 10-game lead you had on them a few months back.
17. (18/22/23/25/25/22/26/30/30/17/16/15/18/17/18) Padres: Maybe the Padres, Giants and Rockies should all tie for last place. No one seems able to pull away or get buried.
18. (19/25/25/27/27/27/28/24/24/20/14/16/12/15/11) Giants: See No. 17. The Giants just aren’t good at defending titles.
19. (17/18/19/23/26/28/27/16/20/21/20/20/16/18/19) Phillies: Ryne Sandberg’s first losing streak didn’t prevent him from getting the interim tag lifted.
20. (22/19/20/18/18/18/24/22/14/19/23/24/24/23/21) Angels: This year’s candidate to make a meaningless run to .500 in the last month.
21. (23/23/24/21/21/25/21/23/23/26/28/29/29/25/24) Mets: Third place would be great for this team.
22. (21/17/18/17/17/24/19/17/18/12/5/10/13/16/20) Blue Jays: Those last 6 games against the Orioles and Blue Jays aren’t likely to determine which of their AL East counterparts will make the playoffs. But they can still play spoilers to the Rays.
23. (20/26/22/24/20/26/23/18/19/16/15/14/15/10/8) Rockies: See No. 17. I have a feeling they’ll be bunched together again next week.
24. (24/20/16/15/14/15/15/20/21/22/18/22/22/22/22) Mariners: Another lost season in Seattle.
25. (25/24/21/22/24/23/25/25/26/28/27/26/25/28/26) Brewers: They’ve pretty much wrapped up 4th place.
26. (26/21/26/19/15/16/20/27/25/23/22/21/21/20/30) Twins: As cold as any team not in Texas.
Final 4
27. (27/27/28/26/23/21/17/19/22/25/25/25/23/24/27) Cubs: Got to see the Braves and Pirates celebrate at Wrigley.
28. (29/29/27/28/29/30/29/28/29/30/29/28/26/21/16) White Sox: It’s not that they’ve outplayed the Marlins in the past week, but they will finish with a better record.
29. (28/28/29/29/28/20/22/26/27/27/30/30/30/30/29) Marlins: And to think at one point it looked like they might avoid 100 losses.
30. (30/30/30/30/30/29/30/29/28/29/26/27/28/29/28) Astros: A double-digit losing streak as the losses hit triple digits is just perfectly fitting for our last place team.
